To start with, your computer network (LAN) has to be of good quality. This means that is that you need good cabling and a secure internal network. After all, your VoIP switchboard and all IP and/or SIP phone terminals are connected directly to that LAN. All your telephone calls are converted into IP voice packets, just like all the other data packets circulating on your network. However, voice packets are very sensitive to the propagation speed on the LAN – the slower the network, the lower the quality of the calls will be. We set all the equipment so that the voice packets – mindful of the QoS (Quality of Service) – have priority over the data packets.
All the installed IP devices have to meet the PoE (Power over Ethernet) standard. Servers, PCs, printers, switchboard, routers, IP devices, scanners and so on are all connected by a switch. If the last one is a PoE switch, it automatically supplies all phone terminals with 48 volts without resorting to individual feeds.
Do you want to connect to a WAN? In that case, you’re best to ensure that you have a fast, high-quality connection (VDSL or fibre). To prevent any risk of loss or delay in the delivery of voice packets, you should preferably go for a SIP operator with its own backbone. This will have a higher data flow rate and ensure that all voice traffic receives priority.
